My Fabric Stash
My fabric stash seems to have a life of its own. Though it lives its life in my sewing room, my stash seems to constantly evolve, periodically shrink or suffer growing pains, and occasionally spew forth hidden fabric treasures that mysteriously have found their way into being.
But here lies my assorted fabric collection, and though I am often unaware of any particular fabric's origin, I've come to love all the assorted pieces that make up the whole of my stash. Knit or woven, old or new, heirloom or trendy, some pieces in my stash are just too dear to sew into any one project.
So the question that we all ask: What to do with my stash and my hidden treasures? I've solved some of my stash dilemma by finding nontraditional uses for traditional fabric types. And I've encouraged the Sewing Savvy designers in this issue to do the same.
Though it's not so hard to imagine and create table runners and dresser scarves from quilt fabric, I think you'll like using quilt fabric from your stash to stitch up the vintage-style apron. Or maybe you'll find a fat quarter or two that add perfection to a stylish onesie, made with matching yo-yo-enhanced socks and headband. But don't let your imagination stop here! If you love quilt fabric, you'll love making these pretty quilted cards -- perfect for Valentine's Day -- from your fabulous teeny-tiny quilt scraps that are far too precious to throw away.
Even time-honored and traditional tapestry is inspirational when used in nontraditional ways. Try combining tapestry with a thrift-store jacket find, and you'll love the updated fresh look, Tapestry Tied Vest, on the Web site at SewingSavvy.com.
Or if embellishment is your bag, sew the stylish travel bag and jewelry tote; or try your hand sewing the handbag designed with tapestry fabric.
Once again, I'm inspired to dig through my stash looking for hidden treasures. What design to sew, where to start, what fabric to choose? Well, on second thought, maybe it's time to simply rearrange my stash and add to it by going fabric shopping for more inspirational fabric!
Until next time,
